Back O'Beyond - the Turrell Residence & Project HQ Back O'Beyond was a beautiful home built into the side of a hill. The shop where we worked was behind the house. The shop was filled with tools, instruments, gadgets, old wooden toolboxes, drawing tables and just enough room for James Turrell's desk and workspace.

My first project was to restore an old wood-burning stove that was to be taken to the crater for those long and cold nights.

Roden Crater was about a 1.5 hour drive from the shop through some of the country's most beautiful canyons and landscapes.
