The second part of the drive was up scenic
Oak Creek Canyon. This canyon is spectacular in all seasons. The canyon
drive starts in Sedona at 4,300 ft. (1311 m) and slowly climbs until it
reaches the switchbacks at the end of the canyon. Here, the road takes
a steep climb to 6,000 ft. (1830 m) until it reaches the rim of the Mogollon
Plateau. In this photo, the top of the canyon, barely seen through the
clouds, is the edge of this plateau.
Michael Yost, project manager, told me about a car that had a huge boulder roll down the hill and land on its hood while on these switchbacks. The passengers were unhurt, but the boulder totally flattened the front of the car. I always thought of that story when transversing the steep and curvy switchbacks. |
