The journey would carry me from near Los Angeles to Sedona across formidable mountain ranges and desolate deserts. Jim was supposed to give me a driving lesson but did not make it before I had to leave, so I headed out of LA driving the truck as a five-speed. It had a five-speed transmission and a three-level axle which gave it 15 speeds. So, you started in low range axle and first gear, shifted through 5 gears and then switched the axle and changed the gear back to first to get sixth gear. It was very tricky and as I was heading out of LA, I saw that I was going to damage the truck if I tried to use just the middle five gears. On the outskirts of LA, I saw a large number of trucks in a rest area and pulled in. I approached the drivers and stated, "I need a quick driving lesson badly!" |
