The drivers asked what I was driving and
how many speeds? I told them a 1935 White and it had 15 speeds. They
all laughed and wanted to see this creature. One asked me to start it
up and I replied that it was already running as it sat there purring.
One team was heading my way and the driver said that he used to drive one just like it in Mexico. He got behind the wheel and shifted the gears like they were warm butter. I tried and at first it didn't look promising, but I finally got it where I could shift OK. But, if I ever missed a gear, which was extremely easy to do, I would have to pull to the side of the road and start all over again. Finally, I felt like I was really driving as I approached the Arizona border. |
